What does an MRI scan sound like?

MRI scans make buzzing and clicking noises. They can be very loud and patients are often given ear plugs to dampen the noise. Open MRI units make similar noises but are not as loud. Below is a short clip from a closed MRI thanks to Dr. Hess and his wonderful Google Knol on brain MRI and CT. As Dr. Hess explains in his post, the noise is not from moving parts but from electronic switching of magnetic coils.

You may want to adjust your computer speaker volume before playing the clip.

I had an MRI with contrast yesterday. The noise iin this video is only one of those I heard. Some were louder, some were different tones, some with backgroud noises also. I wore ear plugs but actually didn't mind the noise as I was listening to the different tones and beats which made the time pass. It was quite cold in that room even with the blankets.

I think it sounds more like an electric guitar.

Some of the sounds made by it are musical. e.g. trumpet playing one note repetitively.

Thank you for posting that - I get asked this question all the time. I will link to your blog for clients in the future.

Just to let everyone know - it's not always this loud when you are in the machine. Most centers will play nice soft music for you so you can relax during your scan.

The sounds are quite musical indeed. As a musician and lover of noise music i had a big smile on my face when I was in the tube, despite of serious injuries.

Since the early days of dadaism and futurism musicians started to use machine sounds to experiment with new 'instruments'.

If you're interested in how MRI noises may sound when they are arranged and composed: For the project 'MRI - SOUND IN SPACE' we recorded material from an mri scanner in different hospitals. We present these treated sounds in a surround sound performance. Check out our concerts if you're near. A CD release is planned this year.
